At this year’s E3 we visited the Nintendo booth and got our hands on the brand new Super Smash Bros. on both the Wii U and 3DS!
Read on for our impressions!
Wii U
The Wii U sessions had four players go two rounds. The first was a warm-up of sorts so that players could familiarize themselves with the controls. The second match became a bit more serious as the winner would be rewarded with a Super Smash Bros. shirt. Myself and SevenBlades tried the Wii U version a few times and definitely enjoyed our time with the game.
The kiosks were using Gamecube controllers for all four players and when we held the controllers in our hands we remembered just how great the controller is. Unfortunately, I didn’t perform as great as I had hoped with SevenBlades raking in most of the wins during the matches.
The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will arrive around the holidays this year.
3DS
The 3DS demo had players run though the new Smash Run mode that’s exclusive to the 3DS version. In this mode, up to four players will run through a large area and battle enemies from major Nintendo franchises (including enemies from Find Mii) Once defeated, enemies will drop power-ups that will enhance your characters traits during the Run such as strength and jumping. After the Smash Run, you’re put into a classic four player match.
I initially had doubts that the Smash Bros. experience might not translate well to a smaller screen, but after getting some time with it I have to say that it felt pretty solid. It’s just a shame that the Smash Run mode isn’t going to be available on the Wii U version as I found it to be quite fun.
The Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. will launch October 3rd.
At the end of the day, I have a feeling that anybody that has ever enjoyed a Super Smash Bros. game is in for a treat when these new versions come out!
